I'm relatively new to the Bay Area, but I already fiercely love Oakland. And I have Some Opinions on some things. Most recently was this morning, when I checked my email to find a note about a post on NextDoor(a thing I loathe but occasionally has useful information so I still use. It's a cesspit of landlords and rich people shouting down everyone else.)
Anyway, someone running for an office posted the link for Oakland's newish system where you can upload videos of crimes and help do the cops job for them! Snitch-o-matic 2024!
I wrote this reply : "Yeah now you can narc on the disadvantaged and do the cops job for them! Maybe they'll send little baseball bats out to top posters so you just skip the wait and beat up people you don't like.
Really though, this is going to get overwhelmed and all those videos are going to get backlogged and go no where. Just another system we pay for that only exists to make you feel better while not providing any benefit. "
I decided not to post it because, ND is a cesspit. But I needed to vent. Systems like these always wind up being used to punch down at the least privileged segments of the population and Oakland has a massive unhoused population that is being targeted by the city and state. They are looking for reasons to fuck with encampments, tents, and RVs that are the homes of folks just trying to live. The Snitch-o-matic is absolutely going to wind up being used to turn people out of what little they have. Sure maybe it will catch a porch pirate or two, maybe. But all systems of oppression are sold as "security and safety." They are closing down fire stations and laying off firefighters and offloading the justice system to whoever has the time and energy to persecute and provide "evidence" to the cops. So maybe we could take the money that went into this and instead buy some empty buildings to turn into housing instead? Wild I know.

Earth has welcomed a mini-moon into its orbit.
For two months, a tiny asteroid named 2023 QO1 will dance alongside our planet, capturing the attention of astronomers and stargazersalike. The asteroid entered Earth’s orbit on September 29 and will travel in a horseshoe-shaped path around us until it departs on November 25.
Discovered by Spanish scientists earlier this year, this intriguing celestial body is roughly the size of a school bus, and while it may not be the largest visitor we’ve had, its temporary residency is nothing short of fascinating. The mini-moon will orbit Earth at a distance of around 25,000 miles, providing a unique opportunity for scientists to study its characteristics, and a fun opportunity for those interested in astrotourism as well. Asteroids like 2023 QO1 often elude detection, but this one has made headlines due to its unusual orbit and the relatively close proximity to Earth.
This is a prime time for skywatchers to take a moment to appreciate the celestial ballet above. While it may be too small to see without a telescope, its presence stirs the imagination. Amateur telescopes aren’t powerful enough to view the asteroid; astral enthusiasts will need a telescope at least 30 inches in diameter paired with a CCD or CMOS digital detector. In other words, you’ll need to travel to a professional space observatory with public access.
